Peek-A-Boo!
(c) 2004-2005 Scott Everett

Creeping along

Well, in the search for mobility, Andrew is taking great strides - backwards. He's recently started creeping, but so far only backward. He'll scoot along backward until he sees something he wants and then roll to get it. Its a lot of fun to watch, but makes me questions why I ever thought a dog with black fur that sheds a lot was a good idea. Actually, I have know idea how people raise kids without a dog. Midnight entertains Drew and cleans up after him.

Healthwise, Drew is still plotting the same course. He's up to 14lbs, depending on the scale. We've agreed to put butter in his foods and are attempting to get him to take formula from a syringe. skot has some success with this method, but I guess I just don't have enough patience and Andrew usually just spits it all out. There is an upper GI x-ray scheduled for next month and we're also supposed to take him for a speech assessment to determine if a special nipple will get him back on the bottle. I have a stong suspicion that Drew just doesn't want to take a bottle and isn't going to, but we're going to try. I've promised myself and Andrew that this will be the last round of testing.

Someone remind me when I meet God face to face that I want to thank him for giving me such a wonderful child. Andrew really has been great through all of this even if his mother is going nuts from it all.

Hypnagogic Designs

Well, Drew has now seen his first Easter and MLS opening day. Actually he slept through opening day. After a doctor's appointment at Cook's the day before and the Race for the Cure that morning, my baby was exhausted. Needless to say, watching DC hand Chivas their heads quietly was difficult for skot and I. However, since Drew will turn the big eight months in two days, I thought I would take a moment to reflect.

So far my boy has become an expert page turner, often turning before we're finished reading the page. He's also become an active participant in our games. Until recently he liked peek-a-boo, but I had to do all the work, not anymore. Now Drew will cover his head with anything just to get you to say peek-a-boo.

Sadly, gone are the days of being everything Drew wants or needs. My little boy is going to be an independent little cuss, just like both his mom and dad. Already he gets frustrated if he's trying to do something and we step in too quickly to help. Also gone are the days of my power napper. The secret - a blanket. If Drew has something to cover his face with he can easily put himself to sleep and stay that way. Afternoon naps were the first to lengthen around six months of age. Next, I had to let go of the morning nap we took together. A couple of weeks ago, I started putting him in his crib to take his morning nap. He had no problems. It almost killed me.

Speaking of sleeping, Andrew is also starting to sleep on his stomach. He's been rolling from back to belly for a while now and I keep finding him that way in the morning. He's still not pushing himself up to sitting or crawling, yet, but he does like to roll across the living room floor.

As for the previously mentioned appointment at Cook's Children's Hospital, Drew still isn't growing. He weighs in at 13.3lbs and according to the charts should be at 17lbs. I don't know where he's supposed to put an additional four pounds. I think if his cheeks get any fatter his head might explode, but its supposed to fit somewhere. The doctor is now threatening to insert a feeding tube if we can't pack on the pounds quickly. skot and I are apprehensive and frustrated that it seems that we keep getting asked the same questions and no one is listening, but we're trying to get Drew to eat as much as possible. We're waking him up at night to feed him and adding formula powder to all of his solids. Unfortunately, bottles are still a problem, so we haven't been able to fortify his main source of nutrition, me. We just have to keep trying and praying. I'm blaming all of this on the Everett genes. The Cherry genes have you start small, but at least you don't stall out at a crucial time.

Beside the Babbling Boy

Andrew said mama!!!! I don't really care if he has no idea what he's saying, he made the sound. To top it off, he said it before saying dada. Yes, I am well aware that he's just babbling and doesn't really mean mom, but so what. He has learned that when he says it, I'm really likely to hug and cuddle with him. Since discovering the sound on Sunday, it has become one of his favorites, especially at volume. I guess now I have a pterodactyl who calls to Mom.

In other news . . . who cares he said mama!!! I have to rub this in a lot, because skot is really jealous and was planning on holding it over my head when he said dada. Now I still fully expect dada to be his first real word, but I'll always have this. Life is good.

Whew, what a month

I think I went the whole of February without posting anything. Let me tell you its been a crazy month. On the plus side, bath time has become a whole lot longer and wetter. Drew has discovered spalshing and likes to try and catch the water when you pour it over him. Nap time was also going smoothly. Andrew was putting himself to sleep for his afternoon nap after a book or two and rocking for a short while. He was even sleeping for an hour or more. Morning nap, well its still a work in progress.

If you'll note, I said naps were progressing, not are. Well, last week the flu came to visit. Andrew started throwing up Tuesday afternoon, that was followed by a fever, and the runs. By Saturday he was recovering nicely, until he suddenly decided that he didn't want to eat. Now he happened to be very hungry, which made for a very grumpy baby. Finally, after going almost twelve hours without food, I shoved some pears in his mouth mid-scream. I knew eventually he'd have to swallow and a couple of screams later he did. That's when he decided that maybe food would be good. Needless to say, he woke up lot that night to eat (and unfortunately throw up some of it). Since then, eating and napping have been difficult to say the least, but now that I'm on the mend from the flu (got it Sunday) and Drew seems to be completely recovered, I'm hoping to get things back to normal soon.

We also saw the specialist last month and were told that they haven't found anything wrong with him and don't expect to. Regardless, the doctors still think he's too small and want us to keep shoving as much food in him as possible. I'm still holding out from putting corn oil in his cereal, though. I'm willing to wake him up in the middle of the night first. There's just something about that that seems wrong. Next, they'll be telling me to let him chew on a stick of butter. We have another appointment in April. More than likely, we'll find out that there's still nothing wrong. Right now I'm just hoping that he didn't loose too much weight with the flu.

Well, I think that about covers it
