Ghost town photowalk

On Sunday, Andrew and I went down to a ghost town about 40 miles SW of us called The Grove (click here for more information on it).  Andrew started shooting with his little Fisher-Price digital camera, but it quickly frustrated the little artist.  I couldn't fix it on the spot, so I gave him my phone to use as a camera.  He had a blast shooting with it.  Here are a few of his images from that trip.

Matthew at the park (we do this a lot)

He looks like he's flying down the slide in these next few photos. Don't be fooled. His slide technique causes him to be the slooooooooooooooooowest person I've ever seen descending a slide.

I took this photo to emulate this one.

Going down (again)!

I have no idea how the dog did this

Recently, the dog has really made a mess of our fence.  So much that we have to now tether him when we put him outside.  He's pulled several slats from the braces and continually gets out.

He hates being tethered and spends the whole time figuring out how best to tangle himself in all of the backyard furniture.  I think he does it just to make it difficult for us to get him in.

Just a quick note

We had to mention this!

Liz had to write a note to Andrew's teacher this morning. Yesterday we had run out of milk fir his lunch and he had to buy some from the school. This was the first time he's had to purchase anything for lunch.

He decided that he wanted chocolate milk. Sadly, he wasn't able to finish all of it at lunchtime. Somewhere in his 5 year old mind resides something resembling frugality. Maybe it's because we recycle, maybe it's because we emphasize reduction, regardless of the reason, he didn't want to waste his leftover milk.

Did you know that those rectangular lunchboxes are not watertight? Did you know that milk gets really sticky when it's close to drying? Did you know that homework tears when separated after being soaked in milk?

I have no idea why he thought that he could take a milk carton home, but I think he's learned his lesson.

Spring Break Adventure Grab Bag

So this week was spring break for Andrew.  I decided we need to make the best of the great weather and have some fun.  This led to the creation of the Spring Break Adventure Grab Bag.   I put a bunch of different things we could do from crafts, to watching movies, to a trip to the zoo.  Andrew got excited about it when I showed it to him on the Friday.

Monday and Tuesday, skot had things planned already.  They went to the museum on Monday and geocaching on Tuesday.

Tuesday night Andrew couldn't wait to pick from the grab bag to find out what we would do on Wednesday.  He drew two things and got to choose what to start with:  go to train store (Books A Million) and go to zoo.  He choose the zoo.  We met some friends also on spring break at the zoo and had a great time.  For Thursday, Andrew pulled scavenger hunt and build a fort from the bag.  After breakfast we started an alphabet scavenger hunt with a trip past the airport and ended up at the park.  We got all the way through S before lunch.  After Matthew's nap, we built the fort in Andrew's room.  Friday Andrew pulled hiking out of the bag.  I think I was more excited than Andrew.  We went to Mother Neff State Park and had a blast.  We looked at fossils, played in caves, and threw rocks in the wash pond.  I wore them both out and they slept in the car on the way home.  Saturday after breakfast at a new kolache bakery, we went in search of a new playground.  The playground wasn't great, Andrew mastered the monkey bars and I taught him how to jump of the swings.  Matthew enjoyed himself too.  At one point I turned to find him swimming in the gravel.  As our last adventure we went to the train store.  Saturday night the Adventure Grab Bag was retired, but Andrew has already asked for it to come back next weekend.  I can say we will definitely use the bag again.  It was great to break away from the errands, chores, and mundane that usually consume my days off and enjoy each other.

Matthew's portraits

I tried to get some portraits of Matthew, but his sock proved to be much too interesting.
